Out of the Box Outdoor Science Kit
It’s summer – the time for special summer activities for kids during vacations. Summer programs for kids have always been a big part of the Saskatchewan Science Centre’s offerings. This year, in addition to kids’ summer camps, we have launched an “Out of the Box Outdoor Science” kit – presented by Nutrien.
The kit is packed with science-themed summer activities for kids aged 4-11 years. You can participate in these summer activities no matter where you are – Regina, Saskatoon, Calgary, or any other city across Canada!
There are 11 fun summer activities packed in a little portable box for kids to take along wherever they plan to hang out this summer - campsites, parks, or even their own backyards. They will get to explore leaves, campfires, bugs, animal poop, tornadoes, microorganisms, sunshine, stars, and much more.
The best part is, there is no technology required to carry out the experiments, as all the instructions are included in the booklet inside the box! Just take your “Out of the Box Outdoor Science” kit on your next outdoor adventure and let the fun begin! Don’t forget to share your pictures/videos using #ootboutdoorscience or #sasksciencecentre.
How much does a Kit cost?
Each kit costs $45 plus tax.
How to get your Kit?
Purchase the kits in person from the Atom + Geek Science Shop located at the Saskatchewan Science Centre.
What’s in the Box?
To capture the vastness of nature, we’ve included a variety of fun activities and experiments in the Out of the Box: Outdoor Science Kit. Here’s a list of activities that kids can do using the supplies in their kits.
Campfire Colour Changer – add magic to your campfire.
Tornado Tube – add an element of adventure to your picnic with tornadoes.
Owl Pellet Dissection – investigate what an owl might have eaten to make a pellet.
Bug Catchers – no outdoor activity is complete without bugs, so why not catch them and study their anatomy?
Leaf Pressing – make lasting art from falling leaves.
UV Bead Bracelets – explore the science behind color-changing UV beads.
Pinhole Camera – know all about the Sun, without looking at it directly.
Planispheres – wondering about the wandering stars in the night sky? Use this star-finder and identify the constellation you see in the night sky.
Foldscope – discover the microscopic life spread all around us - even on our bodies with a handy microscope.
Fake Poop/Scat Identification – don’t be squeamish! That’s what great scientists do to know more about animals/birds in nature – keep calm and study the poop.
Bird watching and aquatic life ID cards.
